What is dual diagnosis? Addiction with depression or anxiety
A clear answer from the Restart team — reviewed November 2026.
Dual diagnosis means a substance use disorder together with another mental health condition such as depression, anxiety or PTSD. Treating one without the other raises relapse risk, so both are treated together in one plan.
- Very common among people who use
- Needs a psychiatrist and therapist together
- Some symptoms improve after stopping; others need their own treatment
Which comes first?
Sometimes use begins as an escape from anxiety or trauma; sometimes use causes depression. Careful assessment after a period without use helps tell them apart.
How is it treated?
One plan shared by psychiatrist, therapist and recovery specialist: CBT, supportive medication when needed, trauma work and long follow-up.
