UAE narcotics law and voluntary treatment
A clear answer from the Restart team — reviewed November 2026.
Federal Decree-Law No. 30 of 2021 (in force since 2 January 2022, as amended) governs narcotics. It sets a treatment and rehabilitation route alongside the criminal one, with no criminal proceedings in cases of voluntary requests for treatment made before arrest under the conditions the law sets, and confidentiality for people in treatment. At the same time, the law requires deportation of foreigners convicted under it in most cases — which makes early treatment especially important for resident families.
- Coming forward early is always better
- Confidentiality is the patient's right
- Check with the official authority
What does this mean for the family?
That seeking treatment is a protective step, not a scandal. Delay is the greater risk — medically and legally.
